I’m Stephen Rowell, a Cumbria wedding photographer with more than 20 years of experience and over 400 weddings behind me. I was born in Silloth on the Solway Coast and remain based in northern Cumbria, so this is not simply somewhere I travel to for work—it is the landscape I know as home.
That experience brings calm to every part of a wedding day. I know when to offer direction, when to work quietly in the background and how to adapt when the weather, light or schedule changes. You can enjoy your wedding without feeling as though the photography has taken over.

What style of wedding photography do you offer?
My style combines natural documentary photography with relaxed family groups and carefully created editorial portraits. Most of the day is photographed as it happens, allowing me to capture genuine reactions, emotions and interactions. When some direction would improve a portrait, I keep it simple and comfortable rather than forcing you into unnatural poses.
Have you photographed weddings at our Cumbria venue before?
I have photographed weddings at venues throughout Cumbria, including lakeside hotels, country houses, barns, churches, marquees and smaller elopement locations. If I know your venue, I can explain how I normally approach its light, timings and photographic opportunities. If it is new to me, I research the setting and arrive prepared rather than relying on a fixed list of familiar photographs.
How much time should we allow for couple photographs?
For most weddings, ten to twenty minutes is enough to create a strong selection of relaxed portraits without keeping you away from your guests for too long. When possible, I prefer two shorter sessions at different points in the day. This provides greater variety, makes use of changing light and keeps the photography from feeling like a prolonged photoshoot.
What happens if it rains on our wedding day?
Rain is always considered when planning a wedding in Cumbria. I use suitable indoor spaces, sheltered areas and short breaks in the weather while watching how the light develops throughout the day. Overcast conditions can produce beautifully soft portraits, while mist, movement and dramatic skies often add atmosphere to the surrounding landscape.
Can you photograph a church ceremony followed by a separate reception venue?
Yes. Many Cumbrian weddings involve travelling between a church, portrait location and reception venue. I account for realistic journey times, parking and possible delays when discussing your schedule. This helps protect the time available for family photographs, couple portraits and your arrival at the reception without making the day feel rushed.
Do you photograph family groups as well as natural moments?
Yes. Documentary photography remains central to my work, but family photographs are an important record of the people sharing your wedding. I recommend preparing a concise list of essential groups before the day. With one helpful person from each family gathering the right people, these photographs can normally be completed efficiently and without interrupting the celebration for too long.
Can you include Cumbria’s lakes and fells in our wedding photographs?
Absolutely, provided the location, weather and schedule make it practical. I look for ways to include the surrounding landscape without turning your wedding into a lengthy location shoot. Often the strongest results come from choosing one accessible viewpoint and spending a short, focused amount of time there in the best available light.
Do you offer drone photography at Cumbria weddings?
Drone photography is available with selected coverage when the location, weather, venue permission and aviation regulations allow. Cumbria contains restricted areas and sensitive locations, so a drone flight can never be guaranteed in advance. When it is safe and permitted, aerial photographs can provide an impressive view of your venue and the surrounding landscape.
Do you photograph smaller weddings and Lake District elopements?
Yes. I photograph intimate ceremonies and elopements as well as larger full-day weddings. Smaller celebrations often require fewer hours, but they still deserve a complete photographic story. Coverage can include your arrival, ceremony, witnesses, family photographs and a relaxed portrait session around your chosen location.
How far in advance should we book our Cumbria wedding photographer?
I recommend enquiring as soon as your date and venue are confirmed, particularly for Saturdays between late spring and early autumn. Popular dates can be reserved well in advance, while weekday, winter and shorter weddings may offer more flexibility. Your date is only secured once the booking process and required payment have been completed.

My packages offer different levels of coverage for intimate ceremonies, shorter weddings and full wedding days. Depending on the option selected, this may include a pre-wedding meeting, professionally edited photographs, a private online gallery, high-resolution downloads, a 48-hour sneak preview, prints, drone photography and an optional wedding album. I will recommend the most suitable coverage after learning how your day is planned.
When will we receive our wedding photographs?
You will receive a small sneak preview within 48 hours when this is included in your chosen package. Your complete gallery is individually selected, edited and checked before delivery. I provide the confirmed turnaround period in your wedding agreement, so you know what to expect before booking.
Are our finished photographs supplied in high resolution?
Yes. Your completed photographs are delivered through a private online gallery with high-resolution downloads and personal printing rights. You can share the gallery with family and friends and arrange your own prints, while professionally produced prints and wedding albums are also available.
How do we check your availability?
Send me your wedding date, ceremony location, reception venue and the approximate coverage you need. I will confirm whether I am available, answer any questions and recommend the most suitable package for your plans. Your date remains available to other couples until the booking has been formally completed.
