Tony & Claire’s Wedding at Armathwaite Hall

Tony and Claire celebrated their wedding at Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa, overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake in the Lake District. This collection brings together photographs from their day, captured by me, Stephen Rowell.

The country house and its grounds give the photographs a clear sense of place. But when I put together a wedding story, I’m also looking for what makes it personal: the people, expressions and details that belong to that particular couple.

A Spring Wedding Overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake

Armathwaite Hall overlooks Bassenthwaite Lake, with gardens and countryside surrounding the house. It’s a distinctive setting for a Lake District wedding, and the April weather meant we could make use of the outdoor spaces for Tony and Claire’s photographs.

We photographed on the lawn and around the grounds, bringing the spring surroundings into their portraits. These outdoor photographs sit alongside the indoor images to show the variety of their day, from the house itself to the landscape around it.

Wedding Portraits on the Staircase

The staircase was another setting for Tony and Claire’s wedding photographs. It brought a different character to their portraits, with the architecture of the hall framing the couple.

Including both the staircase and the grounds gave their collection a balance of indoor and outdoor photographs. Each location adds something different while keeping the focus on Tony and Claire together.

For couples planning their own wedding here, that variety is one of Armathwaite Hall’s attractions. You can include the character of the country house as well as its gardens in the same wedding story.

From the Grounds to the Reception

The reception photographs continue the story beyond the couple portraits. This is an important part of wedding photography for me: giving the celebrations and the people sharing your day as much attention as the setting.

My approach combines photographs of events as they happen with family groups and gently guided portraits. There’s room for both, and I want the finished collection to remind you of the day as a whole.

Dancing at Armathwaite Hall

The dancing brought another part of Tony and Claire’s celebration into the photographs. Alongside their staircase and lawn portraits, these images complete a collection that moves through the different settings and stages of their wedding.

It’s why I like sharing a selection from a real wedding. A single portrait can show you a beautiful location; a collection lets you see more of how I photograph a day.

Tony and Claire, thank you for choosing me to photograph your wedding at Armathwaite Hall. It was a pleasure to capture your celebration on such a lovely April day.
