Chris & Lizzie’s St Theobald’s Church Wedding Near Penrith
Chris and Lizzie’s wedding brought together everything I love about photographing celebrations in Cumbria: a beautiful country church, historic surroundings, wide-open landscapes and a relaxed marquee party in the glorious Lake District countryside.
They were married at St Theobald’s Church in Great Musgrave, a wonderfully peaceful village in the Eden Valley near Penrith. Surrounded by mature trees, open fields and timeless Cumbrian scenery, it was the perfect setting for a wedding that felt personal, welcoming and completely connected to the landscape.
From the emotion of the church ceremony to canapés beside the historic Tithe Barn and an evening celebration in a countryside marquee, Chris and Lizzie’s day was full of genuine moments and fantastic opportunities for natural wedding photography.
Confetti and Celebrations Outside the Church
After the ceremony, Chris and Lizzie emerged from St Theobald’s as newlyweds, surrounded by the people who mattered most to them.
The church entrance created a fantastic setting for confetti photographs, with the historic stone building and beautiful Cumbrian greenery framing the celebration. Confetti photographs are always unpredictable, energetic and full of personality—and that is exactly why they work so well.
Once the congratulations, hugs and laughter had settled, we used the area around the church for relaxed family photographs and natural portraits of Chris and Lizzie. I kept everything flowing efficiently so the couple could enjoy their wedding rather than feeling as though they had disappeared into a lengthy photoshoot.
Canapés at the Historic Musgrave Tithe Barn
Following the ceremony, guests made the short walk to the historic Tithe Barn beside the church field, where canapés were served.
The restored stone barn, neighbouring field and mature trees gave this part of the day a wonderfully relaxed countryside atmosphere. It allowed everyone to slow down, enjoy the surroundings and congratulate Chris and Lizzie before travelling to the marquee reception.
For a wedding photographer, this part of the day is perfect for capturing natural, unplanned moments. Guests were chatting, laughing and enjoying the canapés while Chris and Lizzie had time to take in the fact that they were finally married.
Rather than organising or interrupting these moments, I photographed them as they happened. This documentary approach creates a much more honest record of the day, filled with real expressions, genuine connections and all the little interactions that make every wedding different.
Natural Wedding Portraits in the Cumbrian Countryside
The grounds surrounding St Theobald’s Church and the Tithe Barn offered a beautiful backdrop for Chris and Lizzie’s wedding portraits.
With open countryside, established trees, traditional stone buildings and the River Eden nearby, there was no need to travel far or spend a long time away from their guests. We created a collection of relaxed portraits that reflected the setting without making the day feel like a staged fashion shoot.
I gave Chris and Lizzie simple direction when it was helpful, but allowed them the freedom to walk, talk and enjoy a few quiet minutes together. This keeps portraits natural while still making the most of the available light, landscape and composition.
The result was a mixture of relaxed photographs, wider environmental portraits and more cinematic images that placed the couple within the beautiful Cumbria countryside.
Drone Wedding Photography Near Penrith
The open landscape surrounding Great Musgrave was ideal for drone wedding photography.
Aerial images provide a completely different perspective on a wedding day, revealing the relationship between the church, the historic Tithe Barn, the surrounding fields and the wider Eden Valley. From ground level, the landscape already looked impressive; from above, its scale and rural beauty became even more apparent.
I use drone photography selectively and only when the location, weather and relevant flight restrictions allow. It should add something meaningful to the finished wedding gallery rather than being included simply for the sake of it.
For Chris and Lizzie, the countryside setting made aerial coverage particularly worthwhile. The drone photographs helped establish a sense of place and created dramatic images that complemented the more intimate photographs captured throughout the ceremony and reception.
Wedding Photographs in the Evening Light
One of the advantages of a countryside marquee wedding is the opportunity to make the most of the evening light.
As the day softened and the landscape took on warmer tones, Chris and Lizzie stepped outside for a short portrait session. These photographs only required a few minutes away from the party, but they added something completely different to their wedding gallery.
Evening portraits are often among my favourite images from a wedding. The pace of the day has relaxed, the couple feel more comfortable in front of the camera and the lower light can transform an ordinary field into something dramatic and cinematic.
Afterwards, Chris and Lizzie returned to their guests and the celebrations continued inside the marquee.
Relaxed Wedding Photography in Penrith, Cumbria and the Lake District
Chris and Lizzie’s wedding demonstrated why Cumbria is such an extraordinary place to get married.
St Theobald’s Church provided history, character and intimacy. The neighbouring Tithe Barn created a relaxed setting for canapés and congratulations, while the marquee reception allowed the celebration to continue against a backdrop of open fields and beautiful Lake District countryside.
As a wedding photographer covering Penrith, Cumbria and the Lake District, my aim is to tell the complete story of each wedding without taking over the day. I capture the emotion and atmosphere as they naturally unfold, while offering calm direction when it helps create beautiful portraits.
Chris and Lizzie’s gallery brought together documentary moments, family photographs, countryside portraits and dramatic drone photography. Most importantly, it reflected how their wedding genuinely felt: warm, relaxed, personal and filled with happiness.
