Preserving the History of Silloth on Solway Golf Club

Every golf club has a story. At Silloth on Solway Golf Club, that story spans generations, told through the photographs of the men and women who have proudly served as Club Captain. Many of these treasured images had begun to show their age, making it increasingly important to preserve them before they were lost to time.

Recognising the significance of the club's heritage, Club Secretary Alan Oliver, alongside Past Captains Peter Cussack, Robert Shaw and Martin Slack, launched an ambitious project to create a permanent digital archive of every available photograph of the club's past captains.

What began as an idea grew into a remarkable undertaking that took nearly two years to complete. Countless hours were dedicated to locating historic photographs, organising the collection, carefully scanning each image, restoring damage, verifying records and assembling the finished archive. The result is one of the most comprehensive visual records of the club's history ever produced.

Photographer Stephen Rowell was entrusted with bringing the project together. Every original photograph was carefully handled and scanned using professional high-resolution scanning equipment, capturing the finest possible detail from images dating back many decades.

Once digitised, every photograph underwent meticulous editing in Adobe Photoshop CC. Dust, scratches, fading, stains, tears and other signs of age were painstakingly repaired using a combination of traditional restoration techniques and the latest AI-powered enhancement tools. Some of the oldest photographs had deteriorated significantly over time, requiring many hours of careful manual restoration to rebuild missing detail while preserving the authenticity and character of the originals.

Rather than relying solely on artificial intelligence, each image was individually assessed and refined by hand. AI technology helped recover damaged areas, but the final quality depended on painstaking retouching, tonal correction, contrast balancing and detailed reconstruction to produce historically faithful results.

The completed archive was used to create a professionally produced digital slideshow, allowing members and visitors to experience more than a century of Silloth on Solway Golf Club's proud history through the faces of those who have led the club.

This project is about far more than preserving photographs. It safeguards the legacy of the captains whose dedication helped shape one of Cumbria's finest links golf clubs, ensuring their contribution will continue to be remembered by future generations.

The success of the project reflects the vision, dedication and perseverance of Club Secretary Alan Oliver together with Past Captains Peter Cussack, Robert Shaw and Martin Slack, whose commitment over almost two years ensured this invaluable piece of the club's heritage has been preserved.

For Stephen Rowell Photography, it was a privilege to play a part in such an important historical project. Combining professional high-resolution scanning, Adobe Photoshop CC, advanced AI enhancement and meticulous restoration techniques has created a lasting digital archive that will preserve the history of Silloth on Solway Golf Club for generations to come.
