Abbie and Ross celebrated their Christmas wedding at Hetland Hall Hotel in Dumfries and Galloway. I photographed their day, and this collection shares some of the highlights—from a handwritten message to portraits out in the winter sunshine.

The photographs of their wedding outfits bring together the colours and textures of Abbie and Ross’s day: tartan ties and kilts, brown jackets, and buttonholes with white roses and thistles. Abbie’s dress hangs alongside the bridesmaids’ soft neutral gowns, ready for the celebrations at Hetland Hall.
I photographed both the outfits themselves and the finishing touches as everyone got ready. These smaller details help complete the story alongside the portraits of the people wearing them.
Getting Ready with Abbie and Her Bridesmaids
The preparations gave me a different side of the day to photograph. Abbie having her makeup finished, the dresses hanging together and her bridesmaids gathered nearby all became part of the story before the celebrations unfolded.
The photograph of Abbie having her makeup applied is a particular highlight for me. The light catches her face against the darker room, keeping the attention on her expression and that small moment of preparation. Alongside it, the black-and-white photograph brings the bridesmaids and dresses into the picture, showing more of the scene around her.

A wedding story is about more than the big moments. Among the photographs from Abbie and Ross’s day is a handwritten message to Abbie—a small detail with so much meaning behind it.
I like to include photographs like this alongside the portraits. They help tell a more personal story, preserving something the couple might otherwise tuck away once the wedding is over.

Outside, Abbie and her bridesmaids stood together on the lawn, with low winter sunshine coming through the trees behind them. Their pale dresses and white-and-green bouquets stood out against the darker evergreens and bare branches.
