Ashley & Bex's Briery Wood Wedding | Lake District
Rain, sunshine and the beautiful surroundings of the Lake District all played a part in Ashley and Bex's October wedding at Briery Wood Country House Hotel near Windermere.
Their wedding ceremony took place inside the hotel, while the changing weather provided opportunities for both indoor and outdoor wedding portraits. From atmospheric photographs in the rain to brighter moments when the sunshine appeared, the day demonstrated why Lake District wedding photography is about embracing the conditions rather than waiting for perfect weather.
As a Cumbria-based wedding photographer, I documented their wedding with a mixture of natural photography, relaxed portraits and drone imagery showcasing Briery Wood's countryside setting.
An October Wedding at Briery Wood Country House Hotel
Situated near Lake Windermere, Briery Wood is surrounded by seven acres of landscaped gardens and mature woodland. Its peaceful location makes it particularly appealing for couples planning an intimate Lake District wedding.
For Ashley and Bex, the October weather brought a mixture of rain and sunshine, changing the light and atmosphere throughout the day. The combination of autumn surroundings, traditional country-house interiors and outdoor spaces gave their wedding photographs a varied and distinctive character.
An Indoor Wedding Ceremony at Briery Wood
Ashley and Bex chose to hold their wedding ceremony inside Briery Wood, taking advantage of the hotel's elegant interior setting.
An indoor ceremony is particularly well suited to autumn weddings in the Lake District, where weather conditions can change quickly. It also allows couples and their guests to enjoy the occasion without worrying about rain.
My approach during the ceremony was documentary and unobtrusive, concentrating on the natural expressions, interactions and important moments as they unfolded.
Wedding Portraits in the Rain and Sunshine
The changing weather was one of the defining features of Ashley and Bex's wedding. Rather than allowing the rain to restrict their photographs, we used both indoor and outdoor locations around Briery Wood.
Rain and overcast skies can produce beautifully soft light, while breaks in the cloud bring a completely different atmosphere to outdoor portraits. Working with both conditions allowed us to create a varied collection of photographs within the hotel and its grounds.
It's one of the advantages of Briery Wood as a wedding venue: there are opportunities for natural portraits whatever the Lake District weather decides to do.
Drone Wedding Photography at Briery Wood
Alongside the traditional wedding photographs, I also used drone photography to capture a different perspective of Briery Wood and its surroundings.
Aerial photographs help establish the wider setting of a Lake District wedding, showing the relationship between the country house, its gardens and the surrounding woodland.
When conditions and flight restrictions permit, drone coverage adds another dimension to a wedding gallery, complementing the more personal photographs captured at ground level.
Briery Wood and Cragwood — Two Lake District Wedding Venues
Briery Wood is part of the Lake District Country Hotels collection, which also includes its sister venues, Cragwood Country House Hotel and Merewood Country House Hotel.
While Cragwood is known for its position beside Lake Windermere and extensive lakeside gardens, Briery Wood offers a more secluded woodland setting with landscaped grounds and an intimate country-house atmosphere.
Having photographed weddings at Cragwood as well as Briery Wood, I appreciate the different photographic opportunities these two Lake District wedding venues offer. Both provide beautiful settings for natural wedding photography, but each has its own character.
