Lake District Elopement Photographer
Stephen Rowell — Lake District Elopement Photography
I’m Stephen Rowell, a Lake District elopement photographer based near Wigton in Cumbria. I photograph intimate weddings and small celebrations across Windermere and the wider Lakes, combining natural ceremony photographs with relaxed portraits.
Whether you’re bringing just your witnesses or a handful of your favourite people, I’ll help you plan photography that fits comfortably around your day. You can enjoy getting married, with gentle guidance whenever you need it.
A Real Lake District Elopement at Jesus Church, Troutbeck
Jamie and Anna chose Jesus Church in Troutbeck, near Windermere, for their intimate wedding. My wife and I were honoured to act as their witnesses, while I also photographed the ceremony.
Afterwards, we travelled towards Kirkstone Pass for wedding photographs among the fells. The combination of a quiet church ceremony and portraits in the open landscape gave their day a wonderful sense of place.
Their photographs show how a small celebration can hold a complete story: the anticipation, the vows and the happiness of spending those first married moments together.

Planning Your Ceremony and Couple Portraits
We’ll start with your ceremony time and work out which moments you want photographed. Three hours can suit a ceremony followed by portraits nearby, but travelling between locations needs to be included in that time.
Tell me whether you prefer lakeside views, open fell scenery or the comfort of your venue’s grounds. We’ll choose a manageable plan and leave some flexibility for changing conditions. If it rains, we can make use of sheltered spaces and suitable breaks in the weather.
The aim is to give you meaningful photographs and time to enjoy the experience together.
Lake District Elopement Photography FAQs
We feel uncomfortable posing. Can you help?
Yes. You don’t need any experience in front of the camera. I’ll give you simple guidance during portraits and photograph the natural moments between you, so you can relax without wondering what to do.
Can we include a few family members or friends?
Absolutely. I photograph intimate weddings and micro weddings as well as elopements with just the couple and their witnesses. We can allow time for group photographs and relaxed moments with the people joining you.
Can we have photographs somewhere different after our ceremony?
Yes, where time, access and weather allow. We’ll include travelling time within your coverage and choose a location that fits comfortably around your plans, whether that’s beside a lake or among the fells and where weather and flight permissions allow, I can also take drone photographs for a different view of your day.
